Unknown perfume testing....

I will admit to having next to no knowledge about perfume. As the hoary saying is, I know what I like.

However, I had this bottle of EDT or something which I didn't recognize and can't find a label on (must get out the magnifying glass) and I sprayed it on as a test last night.

Boy, was that first sniff overwhelming! I can't separate the smells, it was just PERFUME! And about half-an-hour later, it calmed down. And then it calmed down again. And it ended up like most of my perfume prefers... woody and chypre --and it still smells that way. Now. What is that -- almost twelve hours?

This happens to me whenever I'm trying out perfumes in department stores and whatnot. It hardly matters what notes are supposedly in them. The first several minutes are always PERFUME. I'm forced to guess that it's the alcohol carriers or whatever popular synthetics are in them that I'm smelling first. Sometimes it's really hard to get through those minutes to where I could actually smell the perfume beyond PERFUME.

You're right! It did first smell like a burst of alcohol, and that was what calmed down. It was still on my pillowcase last night, but it was the calm woody scent I like.
