Reviews!

So, inspired by [personal profile] lunabee34 's idea of weekly postings, here are the ones I've tried lately--- all BPAL, one Yule and assorted imps.

Voodoo: A midnight scent, evoking images of flickering golden firelight reflecting off the sheen of glistening skin and the jerking shadows of bodies suffused with spiritual ecstasy. A deep, powerful, resonant blend of myrrh, patchouli, vetiver, lime, vanilla, pine, almond and clove.
Imp spit on my finger: Definitely getting the "good" spice-musk-patchouli thing, though it’s vetiver-souring slightly as it wears.

Velvet: Envelop yourself in the soft, sensual embrace of gentle sandalwood warmed by cocoa vanilla and a veil of deep myrrh.
Imp spit on my finger: charred cookies, gradually going sour, though the sweet seems to have mellowed to spice, but that’s possibly because it’s next to the finger I opened Voodoo with.

Satyr: Unleash the bawdy, unrestrained passion of the satyr! A ferociously masculine scent: sexual, vigorous, and truly wild.
Imp spit on my finger: a very gentlemanly masculine scent for the name, more like the best of Georgette Heyer sleepy-drawing-room-secret-badasses than, you know, a satyr, though it’s a bit salty-sour--- like the gentleman has been drinking anachronistic whisky sours or margaritas, perhaps, lol.

Red Queen:  Deep mahogany and rich, velvety woods lacquered with sweet, black-red cherries and currant.
On my finger: yeah, this is sweet and lacquer, and ,yeah, my synaesthesia says "red". Okay but not something I’d want to smell like. It died fast, thankfully, leaving a mild sweet-lacquer smell.

Magnificent Autumn:

In the bottle: this lived up to its name right away, and that’s all I know how to say about it. Wandering off into personal stuff for a moment--- autumn is my favorite season, and this autumn has been full enough for me with various sorts of business/busyness that I did not get to take the time to enjoy the season for itself. The first sniff of this in the bottle was like a breath of getting back what I had missed. I don’t know how to describe it more concretely than that.

On me: initially--- very much the same! The thing I noticed with this was its incredible staying power--- I could continue to smell it for hours afterward, and the next morning I was left with a sort of sweet/baby-powder/wood afternote; not my favorite parts of the scent, but DAYUM it stuck around on me, even if not in the very best way! (As a side note--- this is one of the reasons I get "stuck" about trying new perfumes--- sometimes they stick forever on me and it’s often as not the notes in the scent I don’t like as well, grumpgrumpgrumble.)

Al-Shairan: The enemy of God, also named Iblis, He Who Despaired of the Mercy of God. Al-Shairan is the leader of the Jinn, a tempter who whispers false suggestions to men enticing them into evil and perfidious acts, and is the sworn enemy of all of Adam’s children.

His scent is fiery, bright and thick with sweet sinfulness: clove, peach and orange with cinnamon, patchouli and dark incense notes.

On my finger: this is not the first time I’ve attempted to like this scent, and it’s still got a bitter sharp thinness to it that's not my thing, but this time I’m liking more of the spice-plus-citrus notes, even though it’s more like, "this is what I would want the polish for really really really good furniture, heirloom stuff, to smell like after it’s been applied" rather than "this is what I want my skin to smell like." As it ages, it keeps on being more of a thin citrus wood scent than I like for me--- I think I’m missing something like musk, maybe?--- but it’s nice enough, just not so much as a skin-scent. (Furniture polish! But the decadently good kind! Oh, dear!!)

O: it has amber in it, which means that I will love it in the bottle but don’t dare open the imp if I don’t want my fingers to break out in a rash. (Oh, amber, why must you smell so good and feel so bad on me? Such a case of "sniff... and scratch... and scratch...")
