4160Tuesdays (indie perfume; reviews)
4160Tuesdays is an indie perfume house based in West London. I ran across mention of a perfume named 'Sunshine and Pancakes' somewhere and I liked that name, and the perfume house name, and happily discovered they are UK-based. The web shop currently has a massive, short-lived sale on, so I thought I would dash off a quick note so that anyone in the UK who might be interested could go look! They have a Taster Set of seven 4ml bottles - either one of their groupings, or you can choose the Pick Your Own option and write in what you want when you check out (this is what I did). Currently, the Taster Set is on sale for £17.50, which is bloody good.
Unfortunately, they only ship within the UK due to postal regulations, but Lucky Scent in the USA and Indiescents in Canada both stock the brand - there is a full list of stockists on the web site. You won't be able to take advantage of this particular sale but you can still get hold of the perfumes.
The perfumer is Sarah McCartney and the style is definitely quirky and fun. They are formulated with a traditional alcohol base but to me, they don't have that 'perfume' smell that so many mainstream ones do. The site has a full description of the inspiration behind each scent and a breakdown of the notes used to create it, which is a godsend for those of us with allergies! It all just seems like a lot of fun.
I've pasted in the notes and the first paragraph/summary description for each scent, but there is a bit more to each description on the site.
Sunshine and Pancakes
Perfumer's notes:
Sunshine and Pancakes is the scent of sun on your warm skin towards the end of the day on a British beach, when you’re packing up the buckets and spades and walking to the pancake shop.
top notes: lemon/orange
heart notes: Australian sandalwood/rosewood/jasmine
base notes: vanilla/honey/musk/benzoin
I love the name. I love the description. I at least like most of the notes that I know. I can't remember what it smelled like in the bottle - neutral impression - but on skin, it lasted only as long as it took me to go down the hall and wash it off. It was awful on me. :-(
Evil Max
Perfumer's notes:
It’s funny how you can give a fragrance a name like Evil Max and you still find the gentlest of people wearing it, both men and women. This is the one that’s been described as “Robocop’s deodorant” although we think of it as more Miami Vice in a speedboat. That’s because it’s an 80s style, scented statement. It’s also been called a "black forest gateau black cherry yoghurt chypre".
top notes: lime, mandarin, pink peppercorn
heart notes: black cherry, cardamon, musk, geranium
base notes: leather, oakmoss, patchouli, vetivert, tobacco
I have to confess that this fragrance is what convinced me to buy a Taster Set in the first place. Once upon a time, I was very active in the fandom for the TV show Roswell, in which there was a character named Max and a few episodes with an Evil Max. So it had to be bought :D. Happily, I really like it. It does sit on the more masculine side of unisex to me, but it smells good, and it smells good ON me - the base notes are ones that usually work for me, and the sweetness from the cherry keeps it from being too manly for me to wear.
The Dark Heart of Old Havana
Perfumer's notes:
It’s the smell of a walk through Old Havana in the evening, from the Hotel Sevilla to the Caseon del Tango for a dance lesson with Ketty and Felix. Wafts of coffee and tobacco, sweet, sugary desserts cooked with baskets of oranges and mangoes. The scent of peaches beginning to turn overripe, and citrus peel going squishy in the gutter. From a dark doorway a handsome man in white whispers, “Do you want a Cuban boyfriend?” and I speed up a little, squeaking “No! Thankyou very much for asking all the same!" And then the old Cubanos at the tango club greet us with smiles, songs, rum and kisses.
top notes: orange/peach/grapefruit/sugar
heart notes: tobacco /bergamot/tonka/jasmine
base notes: vanilla/musk/ black pepper
It is extremely rare that I open a bottle of perfume to take a sniff and actually say, "Ohmygod that smells so good." And it smells just as fantastic on me. I absolutely love this - in fact, I have already ordered a big bottle of it. It evokes the image of purple flowers at dusk in my head, slightly translucent because you can still see the faint glow of sunset giving the petals a soft richness. It's decadent and inviting, sexy without being OTT, and altogether wonderful.
